Improperly applied hair extensions are the most expensive extensions.
A poor application can cause headaches, and stress on your fine hair.
Are you trying to decide whether you should get hair extensions, or are you wearing them and are very disappointed?
A Message for Fine Haired Potential Clients:
My heart goes out to you when I, as a professional, have worked with many, many fine-haired clients who are so very disappointed with their hair. Your fine hair struggles can be fixed, but need to be handled with care, and especially when getting hair extensions.
What you want to do when seeking out a salon, for hair extensions for fine hair, is to be sure that they can show you actual photographs.
I professionally feel that one, if not the most important part that you are paying for is how the extensions are attached, and how neatly & safely the hair extensions are attached.
It is said that “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR”.
I know that I can only speak for myself, and my business; however much of my business has consisted of fixing poor applications from lesser experienced situations.
BONDS TOO BIG are NOT GOOD!
The correction photograph shows bond attachments that were too big and too much hair was applied. It is great to want to have longer and thicker hair, but not at the cost of safety. You do not want to damage your own hair.
The correction- Done by Ann Marie Walts. The photographs shown are examples of my work. This typed of customized bonding is referred to as “micro-bonding”.
The amount of hair being attached should never weigh more than the section of hair that it is being attached to.
“How To” Choose The Best Salon for Hair Extensions and your hair type?
It is extremely important to work with a hair salon that offers hair extensions on a regular basis and can offer you a very detailed consultation.
ONE DESIGN PRICE…….DOES NOT FIT ALL
I have been certified with Great Lengths Hair Extensions for 15 years! They had the best education, out of all of the other brands that I hold certifications.
Hair extensions take time. There are different types of applications.
Clip In – You clip them in daily or as needed
Tape Hair Extensions (Great for trying out hair extensions or if you are a Bride)
Fusion Hair Extensions (By far-BEST option….ALL THE WAY AROUND)
This experience with Ann Marie has been amazing and with her experience and passion for what she does, it was so easy to put my trust into her work. I’m very happy with the finished product and I love my new hair!
Hair Extension for Fine Hair
Megan reached out to me for hair extensions because she felt that her hair lacked body.
Fusion Hair Extensions can last up to 5 months with proper care.
Researching The Internet
She had been researching hair extensions online for awhile.
Once she reached out to me she had shared…”The internet has been confusing! “
ARE YOU CONFUSED, TOO, ABOUT EXTENSIONS?
Yes! I couldn’t agree more with Megan, that there is so much information about hair extensions on the internet now, that it can simply leave you more confused or armed with misinformation.
What helped Megan was my video about….
Do hair extensions damage your hair?
Types of Applications
What method or hair extension application should you choose for your hair?
Answer: My professional recommendation is not to “go it alone” and get fixated on a certain type without the true professional guidance of a hair extension expert.
Fusion Hair Extensions
Unlike “sew-in” hair extensions, fusion hair extensions can be used for correcting a small section of your haircut.
In this example you will see that this client wanted her bangs/fringe to be thicker and slightly longer.
Benefit = Fixing your haircut or changing up your haircut!
Tape Hair Extensions
Tape hair extensions, when done properly, can be very comfortable, non-damaging, and can last 1 to 1. 5 months with proper care.
You can thicken your hair or add immediate length in as little as 1 to 3 hours!
Tape extensions and Fusion hair extensions are very lightweight and are an excellent choiceif you have fine hair.
Now, it might mean that you are wanting to run to the salon to get your hair colored because you have been locked down.
Is your hair color messed up?
Did you grab a box of at-home hair color, because you thought that coloring your hair was easy?
Well, I have to share that I after talking with a new client that I think I fully understand part of the problem with why coloring your hair might look easy! I asked one guest if they thought that the color on the box, was what and how their own hair was going to come out?
There answer was, “yes”.
Wow!………and there it was, and it simply does not work that way, but it certainly help me to understand the “why” behind trying to do it yourself.
Customizing hair color, and correcting color requires a certain level of professional knowledge. There is much more to coloring hair then just grabbing a tube or a box, and hoping that it comes out the way you want it too.
It’s really not your fault, too, if you have thought that trying to do it yourself was easy, because T.V. commercials target you.
The Box said….”It would just wash out”
It said…. “It did not contain ammonia”
“I’m not sure why I have roots, because it said it wasn’t permanent color?”
Working with a Haircolorist and why it’s worth it!
I can personally share with you that I was a former hair color educator and taught color all over the country.
How to create/formulate and customize original color formulas
How to use different professional strength chemicals
How to determine what your natural hair’s undertones are
How to create beautiful blondes
How to safely lighten up overly darkened hair
How to interpret your “layman” language to be able to work with you to help you achieve what you are looking for
My own professional journey into the industry to become a hairstylist began when I went to hairdressing school in 1992. It has been quite a ride since then.
My career led me to work for a large well-known hair color manufacturer, as a hair color educator. That had kept me extremely busy traveling all over the country teaching.
One Chair…since 1999
As it was my childhood burning desire to “do hair” and to become a hairstylist, I quickly realized that I did not like or agree with my own industry’s “norm” of double-booking appointments.
So, I did something really crazy, 21 years ago! I STOPPED DOUBLE BOOKING.
Reopening Massachusetts and A-One Chair Salon
My own experience, and account of the “impact”
My business, like any business, has it’s ups and downs….like the first time my business’s livelihood was threatened…that business test lasted for 3.5 years!! Oh, my!
Now Enter Covid19 for the next business challenge!
Now when Covid19 came to our area, and how it has impacted the whole entire world…well that really has created things to change, for many.
It already seems like March was 5 years ago. Yet it was only 2 months ago, when I was sitting at my desk, and I was realizing that my business was most likely going to be forced to close.
What would that look like?
I am self-employed. My “job” and “passion” were just about to be abruptly interrupted, and I really did not have a say, because the larger picture of “Flattening The Curve” would soon become every day “Normal”, and without a timeline or an expiration date.
Now…Reopening Massachusetts for Salons

• Adjust workplace hours and shifts (working teams with different schedules or staggered arrival/departure) to minimize contact across workers and reduce congestion
• Close waiting areas and ask customers to wait outside or in cars until it is time for their appointment • Require customers to make an appointment in advance to receive service
Reopening Massachusetts and A One Chair Salon

• Encourage workers who test positive for COVID-19 to disclose to the workplace employer for purposes of cleaning / disinfecting and contact tracing.
If the employer is notified of a positive case at the workplace, the employer shall notify the local Board of Health (LBOH) in the city or town where the workplace is located and work with them to trace likely contacts in the workplace and advise workers to isolate and self-quarantine. Testing of other workers may be recommended consistent with guidance and/or at the request of the LBOH • Post notice to workers and customers of important health information and relevant safety
What the Loft Salon Studio DID NOT have to change?
Well, like I mentioned at the beginning of this article, back in 1999….I stopped double booking, AND began to offer private appointments! For over 2 decades
You can rest assured that you will no be in an overcrowded environment with lots of people, because of a creative business choice that I made decades ago.
So, what is “old”…is the “new” way….and I am happy to be part of the Reopening Massachusetts. Over the years, there were many days that I had questioned whether I had made the right choice about giving up double-booking, and yet many clients have shared their experiences with working with me.
As a fellow Barber had stated on Facebook….“Mom and Pop shops are the backbone of our communities”, and I couldn’t agree with him more!
So, in closing….I have no intention of going anywhere and am truly grateful for my community, family, and my creative stubbornness not to have thrown in the towel. In fact, all of the time I have had off…helped me to dive into growing my online Motives Cosmetics business. 🙂
Life must go on, and you may need a new salon/stylist!
2020 Hair Extension Tips – Everything You Need To Know
If you are brand new to the idea of getting hair extensions, then is article is for you. I will help explain what hair extension options you will have to choose from and how long they will last.
A Little History
If I can personally speak directly to you, then it would be remiss of me to assume that you know everything about hair extensions. That is my job. Various hair extension companies have certified me since 2006.
My passion and curiosity about hair extensions started when there was just a little bit of a “buzz” about it, 14 years ago. The very first company that I had “heard” of was Great Lengths Hair Extensions.
Since I had only heard great things about their company, and it was the next “it” service for my salon to offer, it seemed like a good idea to take a class. Where I was in my career, at that time, it was just another specialized service to add to my certifications.
Now, in the present day, my “reasons” of offering hair extensions have changed, and I will talk about that later in this post.
Is Great Lengths The Best?
If you are the type of person that has to try different things, or have enough information presented to believe if “something is the best,” then I am right there with you.
As an educated hairstylist, I am curious by nature and wanted to be 100% certain that Great Lengths was the premium brand hair extensionbrand that they claim to be. So, over the years, I then pursued being certified by:
Pure Hair Extensions
What I have personally experienced is that each brand does have its energetic marketing standpoint, and as a stylist, I have found that the two brands that fit my needs are both Great Lengths and Hotheads.
For Starters or Beginners:
Clip-in Hair Extensions
You can take them in and out when you need to wear them
Price ranges $60 per panel to $300+ for a full set
You are better off choosing to purchase 100% real human hair extensions.
The reason why is that you will be able to wash then, curl them, and style them just like you do with your hair.
Investment (Long term better option than Tape Hair Extensions)
Starting at $600 to $4000+
Exact Price by consultation
Why Fusion Extensions?
Now, let me revisit sharing with you why my “why” has changed about having to have hair extensions as a service today! Way back in 2006, was when I first became certified because extensions were just a “trending” service. So much has changed since then.
As an experienced hairstylist and seasoned hair extensionist, I couldn’t imagine not having extra hair to provide to my guests. It is like having “extra fabric.”
If you choose fusion extensions, then you will be able to experience MOST CUSTOMIZATION.
Attachments (human-made keratin) are tiny and lightweight
That is a reasonable question, and the hardest to answer without having a consultation.
You will find that the internet will give you all sorts of information on this topic. However, many of these resources that like to provide “averages” cannot speak for an individual salon. My salon has invested a lot of time and education.
What is the average price of your extensions? Let’s pretend you needed your car fixed, and you were calling in on the phone to find out “how much.” Just like most diagnostic service-based industries, it is impossible to provide pricing without having you go in person.
The same is true when it comes to getting hair extensions.
You will find that prices can vary from salon to salon, and many prices do.
Tips On – Researching Where to Get Hair Extensions
Before and After photographs can speak a 1,000 words!
What you really are paying for when you decide to get fusion hair extensions will be the attachment!
What is your level of frustration with your frizzy hair?
If your frizzy hair has you wanting to just scream, then you are not alone. You do not have to suffer from it any longer, either.
Your Shampoo Matters!
Frizzy Hair Tip #1
Is it necessary to shampoo your hair every day? That will depend on your lifestyle.
Why shampoo matters is when you experience having a professional assessment of your hair type, then a professional hairstylist will be able to determine if your hair’s texture is fine, medium or coarse.
Shampoo For Frizzy Hair & Why
You hair frizzes because it lacks moisture, and that is why it will expand. Your hair is attracted to the humidity in the area, and during the summer months you will find that it can or will become very unmanageable!
Imagine a dry sponge. What happens to it? It will expand.
A good haircare regimen for shampoo and conditioner is a must!
In particular, my studio carried JBeverly Hills Products, and their patented size molecule can actually deliver their healing ingredients into the inside of your hair.
Tips About Conditioners
An awesome “must-have” you should be using is a good leave-in conditioner. The reason why is it will act like a weather-proofing barrier. This type of conditioner is not to replace the one you would use in the shower. Layering your conditioner will not weigh your hair down.

The most important step to having beautiful hair, is to be sure to get a hair design consultation. It is important to have a consultation appointment in person. There are so many options to be able to change your hairstyle, that is cannot be handled over the phone.
Photos For Inspiration
One the best ways to communicate is with photographs. It’s ok, too, if you cannot find just one photo. You might find that you may like the hair color of one and the length of another.
How many times have you watched a makeover t.v. show?
What is it that keeps you glued to the end of the makeover show? It is always the final after photograph or reveal!
How To Tips:
Maybe you are contemplating getting a makeover or simply making a change to your look?
Create a Pinterest board is extremely inspirational and really can be very, very helpful when communicating to a salon or stylist what your ideas are. Using pictures to verbalize what you want is truly the best way to share your idea
3. Share your DISLIKES! Yes, your dislikes! Be honest and upfront. You will find that the most creative hairstylists are not mind readers. It would be easier if we were, but it does not work that way.
Makeovers are about change. Change can be a bit scary, but does not have to be. As much as you may not know what you will want, it is safe to say that you will and do know what will not work for your hair!
4. Ask for a CONSULTATION!
It is best to work with a salon or stylist that offers a thorough consultation, and especially if you have a few things that you need to change with your look or hair.
As much as you may be tempted…..just like on t.v…….to possibly say “DO WHAT YOU WANT!“; if you have not established enough communication then what you had in mind and what the stylist has in mind………..might be very far apart.
5. Explore….How do you wish your hair could be better?
Ask yourself what bugs you the most because when it comes to working with an experienced makeover artist…..you will have several options to correct what you do not like.
If you are tired of trying every mousse or volume product on the market, then it may be time for you to get hair extensions. Fusion hair extensions can be truly customized to safely to thicken your hair.
FAST FORWARD TO 3:50 to see the customization that I offer:
If you have fine hair, it is so very important that you work with an experience hair extension expert. Hair extensions are always safe to wear when they are properly applied and properly cared for.
Differences Between “Fine Hair” & Thin Hair
Sometimes fine hair and thin hair are confused for each other.
If your hair is so thin that you can see your scalp, then you are not a candidate for hair extensions. However, that does not leave you without any options. Depending on the severity of your problem, you could benefit by learning more about “hair loss solutions”
Fine Hair- The hair itself can be on the “skinny” side. It tends to lack body, and sometimes will be on the straighter side.
Benefits To Getting Hair Extensions
You certainly will feel amazing, and may even find that your confidence level will increase. I have, personally, worn Great Lengths several times and can share with you first hand that I was really amazed at how many times I had received compliments on my hair.
The best adjective that I can give you about hair extensions is this………….the best accessory a women can wear!!
This is a luxurious service and it will leave you feeling just that way.
Once you add hair extensions to your fine hair, the density will feel thicker. Your hair will have more body, and it will look fuller.
